California state is now set to ban sweepstakes casinos for good. It is regarded as one of the most profitable states for sweepstakes casinos, accounts for nearly 20% of sweepstakes gaming revenue across the U.S.

Assembly Bill 831 passed with flying colors, with the vote ending 63-0 in favor of banning sweepstakes casinos, closing the 2025 legislative season with a major blow to the sweepstakes gaming industry in CA.

AB831 prohibits online sweepstakes casinos that use a dual currency system (Gold Coins and Sweeps Coins) and also targets entities that support the industry in full.

Governor Newsom’s Approval: The Final Step for AB831

The next step for AB831 to become law is for Governor Gavin Newsom to sign it. Once he receives the bill, he has 12 days to act. The Governor can sign it, veto it, or take no action. If he signs, AB831 would take effect immediately on January 1, 2026.

Ahead of Friday’s vote, lawmakers were encouraged to support AB831, emphasizing the bill’s significance and the need for a yes vote.
