CA Sweepstakes Ban Advances to Assembly
Last Thursday, the bill that will allegedly ban sweepstakes casinos in California was passed in an unanimous vote in the Assembly’s government meeting organization committee meeting.
Now, this Assembly Bill 831 passes on to the full assembly for debate and a vote on sweepstakes casinos. A new vote should take place today as this is the final day of the season, so a decision is expected very soon. If this vote passes the full assembly, then it will go directly to Gov. Gavin Newsom.
Up until now, AB 831, had three successful committee hearings in the chamber, with the latest one pushed through earlier this week.
Four Tribal Nations Stand Against AB 831
Following these moves, members of four tribal nations have raised their voices in protest, arguing that the legislation is unfair. The tribes object to AB 831 because they believe it undermines tribal gaming independence and fails to support the economic needs of communities already struggling to provide substantial support to their members.
If this law eventually passes, AB8 31 would not come into force until the beginning of 2026.
